                                                                    My Son, My Son

Well the phone rang this morning

And without any warning

My world changed forever on a dime

all  because of an Iraqi landmine

The hard voice on the line

Confirmed the greatest fear of mine

So that others may live he had given up his

And From a grateful nation

We’re sorry your son was lost

But all I could think of with heartfelt emotion

That it Was the greastest off all cost

Greater love has no man

Than To sacrifice his life for his friends

And To keep us free from them

My son, my son, I will never see again

Four weeks later there was a knock at the door

6 men dressed in marine blues crossed my floor

One by one they saluted me with crisp white gloves

And as we sat down among the doves

They began to tell me of the battle that took my son

While providing us covering fire under heavy attack

He stepped on an IED on the road to Mosul Iraq

And Took the life of your marine son with cowardly tact

And as they all rose to leave, eyes fighting back tears

They thanked me for the bravery of my son of 20 years

As they all began to leave and walk on to be free

A blood stained envelope with a letter inside was given to me

And through watery eyes, heart breaking and mouth quivering

I read 2 lines in shaky handwriting

I love you mom and dad, I died for you and Freedom today

Greater love has no man

Than To sacrifice his life for his friends

And To keep us free from them

My son, my son, I will never see again

It was raining that day

At the local cemetery where he will lay

In a flag draped coffin with 21 guns a salute

All I could think of so resolute

Was my son who had fought and died so bravely on the battlefield grit

Was now resting safely, peacefully and heroically beneath it

                                                                    Greater love has no man

Than To sacrifice his life for his friends

And To keep us free from them

My son, my son, I will never see again

                                                                             My Son
